Different Types of Oral Surgery

Find out when oral surgery is needed to improve the health of your smile.

Here at our office in Pasadena, CA, your periodontist, Dr. Peter Cooper, specializes in surgical treatments and procedures to restore your Implantssmile and boost your confidence. Here are some of the forms of oral surgery that Dr. Cooper specializes can perform to maximize both your health and your looks!

Dental Implant Placement

When it comes to tooth restorations, many patients at our Pasadena office choose dental implant treatment, for this restoration is truly as close as you can come to a real tooth.

The major reason for implants' natural-feeling stability is their ability to functionally replace tooth roots. This is accomplished by our periodontist placing the implant into the jawbone during a minor surgery that is performed either under local anesthesia or with the help of sedation dentistry (if needed). It can take as little as 30 minutes to place a single dental implant depending on the placement.

You could be a good candidate for dental implants if you are a healthy adult who wants to replace one or more permanent missing teeth. Our periodontist can determine your candidacy for getting implants during a consultation.

Gum Grafting

Has severe gum disease affected the shape of your gums? Unfortunately, most people don’t quite realize just how big of a role that the gums play in the overall shape and attractiveness of a smile until health issues arise. For instance, severe periodontitis can lead to significant shrinkage and gum recession, to both the detriment of your health and overall look.

Once gum disease has been treated and is under control, then our periodontist can perform grafting surgery, a procedure in which we gently remove some gum tissue from other areas of the mouth and stitch it into the damaged areas. Over time, this surgically placed gum tissue will restore your gums to improve both their shape and appearance.

Tooth Extractions

Sometimes teeth need to be removed. This may be the case if you have impacted wisdom teeth that are causing you pain or other problems. Teeth that are severely damaged or decayed may also need to be removed and replaced. Gum disease can also lead to loose teeth.

Following the procedure, our periodontist will be happy to talk to you about your tooth replacement options.
